BLOG: Torgan Calls Brown's 'Budget for Fantasyland'

Brad Torgan talks about Governor Brown's proposed budget revisions for California

Assembly District 50 Candidate reacted to Governor Brown’s May Budget Revise, calling it a “fantasyland” budget designed to hold school funding hostage to tax hikes.

“The California Constitution requires the Governor to propose, and the Legislature to pass, a balanced budget.  Governor Jerry Brown has failed in his constitutional duty by proposing a budget that relies on assumptions about the economy and the will of the voters of California,” Torgan said.

“What makes it even worse is his continuing to rely on over-generous revenue projections that fly in the face of the reality of California’s unfriendly business climate. Governor Brown’s budget holds the children of California hostage by linking $5 billion in education funding to the passage of the proposed tax increases he needs to balance the budget. Our kids, our voters and our states deserve better.”

“Perhaps you can get away with make-believe budgeting if you were governing Fantasyland, but California deserves an honest discussion of our fiscal straits and honest answers for our future.  I’ve been in Sacramento, I know where our problems lie, and I want the voters of the fiftieth district to send me back to clean up this mess.”

Brad is a good guy. He is right about the State budget in that Gov. Brown and the legislature had rosie projections of incoming revenues. That is why I liked what Controller John Chiang did to the legislature from last year's budget, even though his action was overruled in court.

Brad speaks the truth, unfortunately most Californians won't want to listen. Gov. Brown's "soak the rich" class warfare plays well with the populists but has time and again proven itself an unreliable well of state income. Every time the economy takes a downturn tax revenues follow suit, yet the forces of big government -- and the public sector unions for whom the state Democratic party is bought and paid for -- keep on milking the sacred cow. And that cow has had enough.
How is it that we have some of the most expensive yet worst performing public school systems in the nation? Hint: it's not because the rich aren't paying their fair share. The same can be said for the obscenely overcompensated law enforcement bureaucracy and the prison-industrial complex. The California dream is gone and if we don't seriously reconsider how we do business -- and soon -- we will never get it back. What sort of California do you want to pass onto your children?
