Weho Council Reacts to George Zimmerman Verdict

Members of the West Hollywood City Council share their reactions to the not guilty verdict.

West Hollywood City Council members this week shared their reactions to the end of one of the year's most watched trials.

A six-person, all female jury, after deliberating for 16 hours and 20 minutes, found George Zimmerman not guilty.

"This verdict is a travesty, and should serve as a wake-up call as we recommit ourselves to the work needed to end racial bias and racial profiling," said West Hollywood Mayor Abbe Land in a statement. "Trayvon Martin’s story sends a chilling message to young people of color and highlights the serious racial issues that still plague our country. In order for justice to ultimately prevail we must seize this opportunity to unite around Trayvon’s story and put an end to racial violence and discrimination."

West Hollywood Mayor Pro Tempore John D’Amico weighed in on the protests surrounding the case.

"Public protests and political action are important," he said in a statement. "Often it's the only way we can make clear our positions about the world we live in."
