Tenants Can Still Pay Rent by Check or Money Order

Gov. Jerry Brown signs legislation which prohibits landlords from requiring tenants to pay their rent online. Paying by check or money order must continue to be an option for all tenants.

West Hollywood tenants still have the option to pay their rent with a check thanks to a new bill which Governor Jerry Brown signed on Friday.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Brown signed legislation sponsored by Sen. Ted Lieu (D-Torrance) which prohibits landlords from requiring tenants to pay their rent online.

Landlords must continue to allow tenants to pay by check or money as not everyone has access to a computer, Lieu explained about his SB1055.

“The elderly, disabled and poor -- or someone who simply wants to keep their options open, can now be assured paying rent online is but one option open to them," Lieu said after Brown signed the measure, the Times reports.

The bill takes effect on January 1, 2013.
