Schiff Asks USPS to Halt Relocation of Weho Post Office
The location at 1820 N. San Vicente Blvd. may be converted into a mail processing center.
The U.S. Postal Service announced plans in January to possibly close the West Hollywood Branch Post Office at 820 N. San Vicente Blvd. and move it to another location, eventually settling on 458 Doeheny Dr.
This move is a part of a natinonwide cost-reduction plan in response to $35 billion in losses over the last five years, according to the USPS.
Rep. Adam Schiff, in a letter to the USPS, epressed concerns about the move, echoing those of some members of the West Hollywood City Council.
The USPS plans to keep using the San Vicente location as a mail-processing center, according to Schiff, who represents West Hollywood as part of California's 28th District.
Schiff outlined several reasons for his opposition to the move, including:
- The new location is on the western end of the city’s boundary and not centrally-located, making it less accessible for many in the community.
- More trucks coming to and from the San Vicente location will cause more traffic.
- The land use change may result in a depressed “dead zone” on San Vicente Boulevard because less for traffic to the post office will result in less foot traffic to nearby businesses.
Schiff also wrote in an email that he is a supporter of a more comprehensive approach to the USPS’s financial troubles and is a co-sponsor of the Postal Service Protection Act (H.R. 630), which would allow the USPS to use the funds it has previously overpaid in retirement benefit liabilities to meet the prefunding requirement.
