City Will Indemnify Duran if DA Files Charges

City Council votes in closed session to provide defense for Councilmember John Duran in the event the district attorney decides to file criminal charges against him related to reimbursement for meals during which he was discussing city business.

West Hollywood City Council has voted to indemnify Councilmember John Duran should the Los Angeles County District Attorney opt to file criminal charges against him related to reimbursement for meals during which he was discussing city business.

On May 2, related to $7,000 worth of meal reimbursement. Duran told Patch that the district attorney was questioning 128 meals he charged over the course of three years.

Prior to its meeting on Monday night, the City Council met in closed session to discuss the possibility of covering Duran’s legal fees. Duran was not present during that discussion.

At the start of the City Council meeting, City Attorney Mike Jenkins announced that the Council had “agreed to provide the defense to possible criminal charges arising from his reimbursements for expenses incurred in performing City business.”

Immediately following Jenkins’ announcement, Duran gave an impassioned speech thanking the Council and providing details about the meals in question.
