City Cracks Down on Bandit Taxicabs

Licensed cabs in the West Hollywood will now be required to display city seals more visibly on their vehicles to help passengers spot legitimate companies.

Beginning this month, licensed taxicabs in West Hollywood will be required to place the city seal on the passenger side of their vehicles. Previously the seals were displayed in the right rear bumper area. The move is part of a new campaign to help fight bandit taxicabs in Weho.

There have been reported cases of identity theft, sexual assault, drivers with drug or alcohol problems and uninsured vehicles in connection with these unlicensed taixs. "Some passengers have been overcharged, victimized by credit card fraud, identity theft or theft of their ATM PIN number," the city announced last month.

There are currently seven fully licensed and insured franchised taxi companies that are authorized to operate in West Hollywood, reports the city's Taxi Specialist. These companies employ drivers that have passed a criminal background check and are subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing, as well as an annual inspection.
