Tuesday's Scoop: Lady Wrestlers, Three Authors and Raising Boys

A documentary about a female wrestling show screens at the Silent Movie Theater. Three authors talk at the Weho Library and an author talks about problems boys face in our society at Book Soup.

Greetings and welcome to City Scoop. Today is Tuesday, August 21, the 234th day of 2012. Here’s what’s going on in West Hollywood today.

Lady Wrestling

For five seasons from 1986 to 1990, female wrestling was a staple on TV in the form of Glorious Ladies of Wrestling. Taped at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas, the show was an overnight sensation thanks to the combination of beautiful women, colorful characters and outlandish plots. A new documentary examines that phenomenon interviewing the 12 women cast about their experiences and how the show affected their lives. G.L.O.W.: The Story of The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling screens at 8 and 11 p.m. at the Silent Movie Theatre, 611 Fairfax Ave. Four of the stars will be on hand to discuss the film following the 8 p.m. show, along with the documentary’s director and writer.

Boys are also four times more likely to be medicated than girls. Author Lisa Bloom examines all these facts and many more in an alarming but fascinating new book, Swagger: 10 Urgent Rules for Raising Boys in an Era of Failing Schools, Mass Joblessness, and Thug Culture. Bloom discusses and signs copies of her book starting at 7 p.m. at Book Soup.
