Thursday's Scoop: Sunset Strip Market, Tony Clifton and Film Festivals

After an ultra successful debut last week, the Sunset Strip Market is back for its second week. Abrasive lounge lizard Tony Clifton plays at the Comedy Store and Book Soup has the authors of a new book on navigating film festivals.

Greetings and welcome to City Scoop. Today is Thursday, June 21, the 173rd day of 2012. Here’s what’s going on in West Hollywood today.

Sunset Strip Market

The Sunset Strip is the happening place to be on Thursday nights thanks to the new Sunset Strip Market, a certified farmers’ market that also features live music and cooking demonstrations. This week’s guest chef is Jorge Chicas of RH preparing vegetable paella and gazpacho using ingredients sourced from the Market. Open 5-9 p.m., the Sunset Strip Market is in the old Tower Records overflow parking lot, just east of Horn Avenue.

Planning Commission

The city’s Planning Commission will hear requests to allow two parking spaces in the front setback of a triplex at 511 San Vicente Blvd. and to allow a pawnshop to expand into the adjacent shop. The Commission will also consider a zone-text amendment to limit the number of financial institutes on Sunset Boulevard. The Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chamber in the building.

Tony Clifton lives on

One of comic Andy Kaufman’s best known characters was the audience-abusing lounge singer Tony Clifton. Sometimes performed by Kaufman, sometimes by others, the Clifton character was a staple in the Taxi star’s comedy shows. Despite Kaufman’s death 28 years ago, Tony Clifton lives on. The has booked Clifton every Thursday and Friday night through the end of June. Backed by a band and burlesque dancers, Clifton proves how much mayhem he can create, especially when it comes to the famous Hooker Raffle. Showtime is 9 p.m.
