Sunday's Scoop: Comedy Potluck, B-I-N-G-O and Take a Walk

Take a walk to enjoy the jacarandas beginning to bloom, play drag queen bingo at Hamburger Mary's or get your fill of jokes at the Comedy Store's Comedy Pot Luck.

Greetings and welcome to City Scoop. Today is Sunday, April 29, the 120th day of 2012. Here’s what’s going on in West Hollywood today.

Take a Walk

It’s a quiet day in Weho with few scheduled events happening. But it’s also the perfect spring day to take a walk. The jacarandas are beginning to bloom, birds are chirping, flowers are ablaze in all their glory, just begging everyone to go to the park or stroll along Santa Monica Blvd or Melrose or one of the residential streets to enjoy all the beauty the city has to offer.

B-I-N-G-O

Wednesday may be the night most people think of bingo at Hamburger Mary’s, but Mary’s also has a Legendary Bingo session on Sundays at well. With drag queens calling the numbers, this is anything but a B-9 affair. It’s wild and outrageous and oh, so fun. Get there B-4 7 p.m. when the game start. Afterward, stick around for “Mary-aoke,” Hamburger Mary’s special version of karaoke.

Comedy Pot Luck

Pot luck nights at the Comedy Store can be a treat. Walking in the door, you never know what you’re going to get, but you never leave hungry. The opening course is an open mike session where young comics try out their material. That’s followed by a main course of jokes from the store’s staple of regulars. And then for dessert, a national headliner comic or two usually pops in for some laughs. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the comedy servings can go on well past midnight.

Jokes and songs for the kids

Funny man Kevin Nealon hosts a comedy/music show featuring Sarah Silverman, Aimee Mann, David Spade, Dana Gould and others. It’s a benefit show for One Kid One World, a non-profit dedicated to creating academic and athletic programs for children living in impoverished communities. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. at Largo, but according to the website, it’s already sold out.

Bands Playing in Town

  • Five to One at the Roxy Theatre. Show starts at 7 p.m.
  • Brianna Lynn with Hudson Henry, Slims of Sensible and Laurie Larson at the Whiskey A Go Go. Show start at 7:30 p.m.
  • Peligro (featuring D.H. from Dead Kennedys) with Dedfuel, What Hands Are For, Opus Dai, and Bullet Made Statues at the Viper Room. Show starts at 8 p.m.
  • Raya Yarbrough at the Roxy Theatre. Show starts at 9:30 p.m.
