Greetings and welcome to City Scoop. Today is Sunday, July 22, the 204th day of 2012. Here’s what’s going on in West Hollywood today.
Don Kirshner is a name not everyone recognizes, but people the world over know the music he helped create as a song publisher and rock producer – “The Locomotion,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” “On Broadway” and many more. He’s also the man responsible for talents like Carole King, Neil Sedaka, Bobby Darin, The Monkees and the Archies. Plus, he hosted his own weekly 1970s TV series Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert. Journalist Richard Podolsky had written a biography of the bubblegum pop king that’s getting raves, Don Kirshner: The Man with the Golden Ear: How He Changed the Face of Rock and Roll. Podolsky discusses and signs copies of the book at 4 p.m. at .
Take a bit of thwarted romance, add in some cross-dressing, secret identities, witty wordplay and a healthy dose of overall silliness and you’ve got the makings of a great play. In this case, the great play is Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice.” The Classical Lab Theater performs the beloved play as part of the city’s Shakespeare in the Park series. The comedy performs at 5 p.m. in the courtyard of Great Hall in Admission is free.
It may not have all the drama of the 1990s campy nighttime soap opera, but the does have lots of fresh produce for sale. Open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the certified market is a popular destination for locals looking to stock up on fresh items to start the week. The market is located on Melrose Place (just off Melrose Avenue) between Orlando Avenue and La Cienega Boulevard.
