Sharpening pencils

Who would ever imagine sharpening a pencil as an artisan undertaking? And who would ever imagine that talking about it could be so hilarious? Author David Rees has become the world’s number one #2 pencil sharpener in the world and has, naturally, written a book (by pencil, no doubt) about it, How to Sharpen Pencils: A Practical & Theoretical Treatise on the Artisanal Craft of Pencil Sharpening for Writers, Artists, Contractors, Flange Turners, Anglesmiths, & Civil Servants. Rees discusses and signs copies of his book at Book Soup at 7 p.m.

's north parking is the place to be to get some of the freshest fruits and vegetables currently in season as the weekly farmer’s market gathers there from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. It’s always a great place to stock up on locally grown foods, plus start up chats with interesting people.

Glam Metal Revisited

The House of Blues hosts Steel Panther, an LA-based group that got its start on the Sunset Strip in 2000 under the name Metal Shop. Known for profane, humorous lyrics and exaggerated stage personas, this band manages to both parody and pay homage to the great glam metal bands of the 1980s like Guns N’ Roses, Motley Crue and Poison. Showtime is 9 p.m.

Other bands playing in town

  • Midnight Mirage with Lucy Walsh, Katie Cole, Angels Landing and BG5 at the Roxy Theatre. Show starts at 7:30 p.m.
  • Dirty Sanchez with Elephant Seal, 4 Billion Souls, Whitley Heights and Aaron Durr at the Viper Room. Show starts at 8 p.m.
  • Fartbarf with Scarlet Fever, Lea Luna and Jessarae at the Whiskey A Go Go. Show starts at 8 p.m.
