Runyon Canyon to Close Early on July 4th Weekend

Noting fire risk, city decides to close park at 5 p.m. during July 1-4.

Runyon Canyon Park in Los Angeles, a popular spot for viewing Fourth of July fireworks, will be closed well before sundown during the holiday weekend, a city panel has decided.

Responding to a report citing the danger of fire from people setting off illegal fireworks, the city Department of Recreation and Parks' Board of Commissioners voted Wednesday to close the park at 5 p.m. during July 1-4. Current park hours are from dawn to dusk.

Police and park rangers are to be on hand during the early-closure period to ensure compliance and patrol the area, the report said.
