Expect Road Closures for Sunday's Oscars

The Elton John AIDS Foundation bash will cause traffic delays near West Hollywood Park Sunday evening.

The 84th Academy Awards ceremony may be happening in Hollywood, but Weho will have some traffic headaches of its own Sunday.

Expect delays beginning at 2 p.m. when San Vicente Boulevard between Santa Monica Boulevard and Melrose Avenue closes for Elton John AIDS Foundation's 20th annual Academy Awards Viewing Party in the newly redesigned . That closure will remain in effect until 2 a.m. on Monday, according to the city.

Also note during that time only the eastbound lane on Sunset Boulevard from La Cienega Boulevard to Sweetzer Avenue will be open to through traffic, with the other reserved for special event attendees.

If you are planning to venture east, stay away from the Kodak Theater. Beginning at 10 p.m. Sunday, Hollywood Boulevard will be closed between Orange Drive and Highland. That stretch will remain closed until 6 a.m. Feb. 28.

  • North and south sidewalks of Hollywood Boulevard between Orange and Highland, with the exception of an 8-foot pedestrian access, except for the area directly in front of the Awards Walk leading to the Kodak Theater.
  • Pedestrian crosswalk mid-block on Hollywood Boulevard between Orange and Highland in front of the Kodak Theater.
  • North and south curb lanes of Hawthorn Avenue from Highland Avenue to Orange Drive.
  • Hawthorn alley behind the El Capitan Theatre from 300 feet east of Orange Drive east to the "T" alley.

Metro bus riders will also have to deal with some detours due to street closures. Bus lines 156, 212, 222 and 217 will be detoured from Hollywood Boulevard between La Brea Avenue and Cahuenga Boulevard and on Highland Avenue between Franklin Avenue and Sunset Boulevard, according to Metro.
