City Celebrates Senior Month in May

West Hollywood observes May as Senior Month with many activities designed to recognize its senior community. An awards luncheon, health fair and several lectures are planned.

The following is a press release from the City of West Hollywood:

The City of West Hollywood will celebrate Senior Month in May with a series of events including an Awards Luncheon, Health Fair, and several lectures. For more than 20 years, the city has celebrated Senior Month to recognize its thriving Senior community. The roster of events is presented by the Senior Advisory Board and the Senior Activity Programs of the West Hollywood Comprehensive Services Center.

  • The City of West Hollywood honors outstanding members of its Senior community at the 11th Annual Senior Awards Luncheon. The event will take place on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Fiesta Hall in Plummer Park. Admission is $5. For reservations and for more information, please call (323) 876-1717.   • The city's 11th Annual Senior Health Fair will take place on Wednesday, May 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. a.m. the Community Center in Plummer Park. The Senior Health Fair will feature presentations, health screenings and representatives from more than 40 community organizations. Admission to the Senior Health Fair is free.   • The May Senior Advisory Board Meeting and Reception will take place on Wednesday, May 23 starting at 2 p.m. in the Community Center in Plummer Park. The city’s Senior Advisory Board will discuss important community issues affecting Seniors. The Senior Advisory Board meeting will be broadcast live on Citychannel 10 on Time Warner Cable. Lecture Series

A Lecture Series with topics including Senior health and financial well-being will be held throughout May in the Community Center in Plummer Park. Admission is free, and simultaneous translation in Russian will be available at all lectures.

The series lectures include: 

  • Free Programs That Help To Pay For Your Health Care will be held on Thursday from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Community Center in Plummer Park. A counselor from the Center for Health Care Rights will discuss the upcoming changes to Medicare, as well as programs that can save Seniors money on their health care. Admission is free.   • A West Hollywood Library Art Tour will take place on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. A bus will leave from the Fountain/Vista parking lot at Plummer Park at 10 a.m., and will return from the library by noon. Andrew Campbell, the city's Cultural Affairs Administrator, will lead a docent-guided tour of the art in the West Hollywood Library. After the tour, there will be a presentation about the Friends of the West Hollywood Library and a visit to their onsite used bookstore. Admission is free.   • A Fragrance Workshop will take place on Thursday, May 17, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in Art Room 2 of the Community Center in Plummer Park. Angela Allyn, the Activity Director at JFS/Freda Mohr, will discuss how perfumes are designed and prepared. Scent sniffing will be involved. Refreshments will be served. Admission is free.   • "Salad From Your Balcony" is the topic of a lecture on Tuesday, May 22 held in Art Room 2 of the Community Center in Plummer Park. Gardening consultant Alicia de Soto will discuss environmental stewardship and growing vegetables and herbs in pots or on window sills. Samples will be distributed. Admission is free.
