Dogs are supposed to be kept on a leash at all times in West Hollywood Park. There are signs at park entrances letting people know that dogs must be leashed.
But Warren Merriman wants to see that changed. He wants to see the city create an off-leash dog park area in West Hollywood Park. He notes that currently, the only off-leash dog park is located at Hart Park, the park near Sweetzer Avenue adjacent to Sunset Blvd. Merriman feels that small dog park is insufficient to meet the needs of the city’s canine population.
Merriman has created a petition at Change.org to get a off-leash dog park area created in Weho Park. In the petition description, he notes that the city prides itself on being a leader in animal rights, being the first to outlaw cat declawing and to ban the sale of clothing apparel containing animal fur. He also notes that West Hollywood is the city that instituted a law whereby pets be called “companions” and owners be called “guardians.”
“Let's live up to our reputation of being an animal friendly city,” the petition says. “If we truly care for our dog companions, we will provide them the space they need to live long, healthy and happy lives. Build them a sufficiently sized off-leash area where it's needed. Let's show our companions that we really do love them.”
