Saturday's Scoop: The Roots to Play Pre-Emmy Jam at House of Blues

Main Event: The Roots Pre-Emmy Jam

The influential hip hop group is hosting a pre-Emmy soiree at the . Festivities kick off around 9 p.m. Made up of members Black Thought (MC), ?uestlove (drums), Kamal Gray (electronic keyboard), F. Knuckles (percussion), Captain Kirk Douglas (electric guitar) and Owen Biddle (bass), the Philadelphia, PA, based band formed in 1987 and has been winning over fans since its debut album, Organix, in 1993.

  • There is an hour-long Book Fair Volunteer Orientation Meeting in West Hollywood Park Auditorium at 10:30 a.m. Learn more about volunteering at the 10th annual West Hollywood Book Fair on Sunday, Oct. 2—including ushering, staffing information booths or helping at stages, arts and crafts and children's activities. Volunteer spaces are limited, so people are encouraged to sign up today.
  • The Los Angeles chapter of Americans for Safe Access is back on schedule for its monthly meeting about the local, state and federal campaigns for safe access to medical cannabis at 1 p.m. in the Community Room (#152) of West Hollywood Gateway Mall (7100 Santa Monica Blvd.). Attendees are encouraged to write or sign a letter to Gov. Jerry Brown in opposition to SB 847.
  • Ethlie Ann Vare will discuss and sign copies of Love Addict: Sex, Romance, and Other Dangerous Drugs at . Vare is an award-winning author, journalist and screenwriter with four marriages, drug addiction, a stint in jail and years of network television under her belt. The event begins at 4 p.m. The book costs $14.95.
