Plummer Park Redesign Coming in May

City Council will receive a report in May from the subcommittee working on alternate designs for the $41 million renovation of Plummer Park. Public meetings to weigh in will be scheduled after the presentation to the council.

The City Council will receive a report from the subcommittee exploring other options for renovating Plummer Park in May. That is what City Manager Paul Arevalo told the council at its Monday night meeting.

“We will have a formal item on the council agenda in May,” Arevalo said.

This announcement came in response to growing questions from community members about the status of the Plummer Park redesign.

In December, amid growing that would see a majority of the park closed for 18 to 24 months, the council agreed to reactivate an internal subcommittee to work on alternative designs for the park renovation.

Since that time, no updates have been offered.

“If anyone’s feeling left out, you’re not left out,” said Mayor John Duran. “There’s just no there there.”

“We are moving slowly and deliberately, but we are working on it,” said Councilmsn John D’Amico, who is serving on the subcommittee. “No decisions have been made except to be methodical.”

Councilwoman Abbe Land, who also serves on the subcommittee, acknowledged that it did feel like things were moving slowly. She said when they do make a public announcement about the park redesign, they will do extensive public outreach to make sure everyone is included in the process.

Duran said he did not expect the council to take any significant action regarding the park redesign until the end of the year, noting that they must give all interested parties time to weigh in on the new plans.

“We’re not leaving anyone out of the process,” said Duran.
