Weho Cracks Down on Abuse of Disabled Placards

People who don't carry the proper identification card can be fined $500, the city says.

In an effort to improve parking accessibility and reduce disabled placard abuse, the city of West Hollywood said Friday that it is cracking down on motorists who are obtaining the signs fraudulently.

Under a program initiated by the city of West Hollywood's parking division, drivers displaying disabled placards may be randomly approached to provide proof of proper ownership, the city said. California's Department of Motor Vehicles requires individuals to carry an identification card that's issued with the placards.

"Failure to provide the required identification card will result in the confiscation of the disabled placard and a parking citation for misuse, which carries a $500 fine," the city said.

"Motorists who receive a parking citation for misuse and have their disabled placard confiscated may retrieve the placard and have the parking penalty reduced to a $25 administrative fee by presenting the DMV identification to the city's parking enforcement office within 21 days," the city's announcement said.

If the citation is not contested then the original fine will be considered valid and the placard reported as fraudulent and removed from circulation, the city said.
