A couple years ago a woman leaving the Rainbow Grill crossed Sunset at Hammond, apparently against…Read More the light, a little away from the crosswalk trying to catch a cab and was killed by a hit and run driver (who later turned himself in; he likely was speeding and might have had other violations which caused him to run). The point is that discouraging people from jaywalking could save lives.

Refer Madness, eh Paul?
I'm sure many appreciate your concern for other's health, and "what…Read More little brain cells" they may have. But beyond your concern for others, how does what others do in the privacy of their own home, without harm to others, affect you?
Perhaps, you are concerned that IT is contagious, and that freedom of thought might catch up to you too---but alas, methinks it unlikely...so don't worry yourself so.

The long history of Television Journalism on "Pit-Bull-Attacks" has been a means of…Read More getting ratings by vilifying one dog breed, Pit Bulls. Probably second to "Shark Attacks", any possible story about "Pit-Bull-Attacks" draws viewers and creates (in both instances) an irrational paranoid fear in the population at large for a real threat but the odds/chances/statistics of anyone else being such a victim are statistically irrelevant compared to the countless dangers in every day life from Driving/Traffic, Theft/Robbery/Assaults, Food Poisoning and just living in a big city.
Further, most news stories inaccurately identify the dog breed in such stories. There are 15 or more breeds of dogs that have either "pit" or "bull" in their breeds name and are mistakenly all called Pit-Bulls when they have no similarities to what is the standard "Fighting Pit-Bulls" that are used in illegal dog fighting events.
The American Pit Bull Terrier IS NOT A PIT BULL in size, shape, temperament or prey instinct. In fact they are such sweet non-aggressive dogs, they were call "Nanny Dogs" for years because of how good they were with small children.
A fighting pit-bull can be identified as a smaller dog with a head that has a face that is wider than it is long in the snout.
A dog with a snout like a Lab (regular dog face) IS NOT A PIT BULL.
Californians for Regulating Pit Bulls April 11, 2013 at 04:08 pm
If it were just this issue alone, that service animals are often the victim of pit bull "dine…Read More and dash", isn't it enough to suggest that these dogs be heavily regulated, and only people with the proper facilities who could afford the liability could own them?
44% of all seeing eye-teams have reported being attacked by other dogs. Having a dog that was bred purposely created for dog aggression is as problematic for these people as buildings inaccessible for wheel chairs. Why doesn't the advocacy for people with disabilities do something about this issue?

Pit bulls are wonderfully sweet pets...until they're not. You can't undo generations of their being…Read More bred to be violently aggressive. Even responsible owners can't be sure of the innate temperament of the dog they're getting. I no longer take my dogs to Laurel Dog park because of pit bull attacks there.

BUT WITHOUT KNOWING MONDAYS COUNCIL MEETING AGENDA/CALENDAR ...
I'LL BET THERE IS A VERY CONTROVERSIAL PROPOSAL/TOPIC THAT IS REQUIRED BY LAW TO BE PART OF THE CITY MEETINGS, AND NOT COINCIDENTALLY, THESE AWARDS WILL TAKE A REALLY LONG TIME AT THE BEGINNING OF THE MEETING, THEN A LONG TIME WITH REGULAR BUSINESS, AND FINALLY.....
THE VERY CONTROVERSIAL DECISION THE COUNCIL HAS ALREADY MADE AND IS FORCED TO BE DISCLOSED IN THIS PUBLIC FORUM, WILL COME AFTER HOURS AND HOURS AND AT THE WEE HOURS OF THE LATE NIGHT/EARLY MORNING ...
AFTER MOST WHO ARE CONCERNED HAVE TIRED OUT OR BEEN FORCED TO LEAVE DUE TO THE TERRIBLY UNCOMFORTABLE SEATING IN THE BRAND NEW MULIT-MILLION DOLLAR NEW CITY COUNCIL MEETING CHAMBERS.
.... NOT A COINCIDENCE (IN MY OPINION) THAT THE PUBLIC SEATING, LIGHTING AND AUDIO IN A STATE OF THE ART, AWARD WINNING DESIGN, LEED CERTIFIED ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS IS SO BAD AND PHYSICALLY UNBEARABLE THAT PEOPLE DON'T STAY FOR THE MEETINGS .... AND I AM SURE MANY HAVE GIVEN UP ALL TOGETHER DUE TO THE PROBLEMS WITH THE HALL.
A FULL CEREMONY IN A GRAND MANNER COULD BE HELD FOR THESE AWARDS ANY TIME, ANY WHERE ... AND UNLIKE THE ACTUAL AGENDA WHICH IS REQUIRED BY STATE LAW TO BE HELD, IS NOT LEGALLY REQUIRED TO BE DURING THE ONLY MANDATED PUBLIC MEETINGS.

I use the crosswalks on Sunset and Santa Monica all the time and rarely have a problem. One needs to…Read More look straight at oncoming traffic to let them know you're going, and they stop.
I'm sure that there are violators, but the notion that "no one" stops is ludicrous. Most drivers do.

Two people arrested for public drunkenness? They must be kidding? So they were not driving, were…Read More they passengers? If they were passengers, isn't that what they tell you to do if you have too much to drink - get a ride! If they want to arrest people for public drunkenness, they should just set-up at Santa Monica and San Vicente every Saturday night and arrest half the people that walk by.
I ride a motorcycle, so I am 1000% in favor of getting impaired drivers of any sort - texting, drunk, drug users off the road, but the idea of arresting someone at a checkpoint for public drunkenness seems absurd on the face of it.
Steve Lamson April 7, 2013 at 12:38 pm

Too bad this irresponsible candle-lover didn't die in the fire. Imagine, putting your neighbors'…Read More lives at risk, over some stupid candles. She is a horrible person. I can't wait for the next time she does it. She clearly hasn't learned her lesson. Her landlord said he hopes she continues renting. Yet everyone seems to have sympathy for this irresponsible candle lover. Had she killed some of her neighbors, as she easily could have, we might be hearing a different story. What a horrible person.

Well I'm assuming it was more breaking news as far as the traffic delays and concerns. But I think…Read More the passenger and driver for allowing the passenger to exit at a traffic light are at fault 100 percent. People drop me off and think I'm "anal" for insisting on pulling over into a space or side street but its for safety and being polite in case the light turns green. But always should look no matter what, I know this isn't a regular bike but if there is room to turn right then I would have too.
Darrell February 26, 2013 at 03:12 pm
As I said, Paul, drivers have to be prepared for the unexpected. My point is that I see far too…Read More many pedestrians who appear to put the ENTIRE onus on the driver to care for the pedestrian's safety, and take little or no precaution to share that responsibility.
A case in point; the lane next to me was stopped because of traffic, but my lane was wide open. But there suddenly appeared a guy who walked between the stopped cars and entered my lane without first making sure that lane was safe to enter. Obviously I stopped, but I was alarmed at how little care he gave to what could have happened. The driver in a case like this, if the worst happened, would be terribly victimized and traumatized as well. The cross-walker often needs to take on equal responsibility for his own safety and make sure each lane is safe to enter before he just walks out there. (Especially, DON'T TEXT and enter the cross-walk at the same time!)
Paul February 26, 2013 at 02:18 pm
I beg to differ with you Darrell. People should not drive faster the 15 RPM's on that stretch of…Read More Santa Monica Blvd. The street is narrow and shops, eateries, restaurants and pedestrians everywhere. My question would be: where were the banks armed guards? Outside smoking a cigarette? [As I have…Read More seen]. Their job is INSIDE the bank, protecting the banks employees and money. We now have loss of life...that is staggering! Something must be done and we need to hold the city and the MTA feet to the fire until it is safe to cross a street. Those cross walks are a joke at night.
Perhaps we should make it so the City Council is forced to cross them a few times a month to get to work at all hours of the night and day. Bet you'd see some fast changes then.
