Re: your comment about why the rents have gone up. It is partially that, but it is also because of…Read More all the transplants moving in and paying the new exorbitant rents and/or property prices because it is less than NY prices. It is pricing those of us that were around before and during Cityhood, let alone the elderly and disabled among-st us. If I were to lose my apartment for any reason I could NOT afford anything else in town. I am therefore a prisoner of my apartment. I grew up in this area. I've lived in West Hollywood since before Cityhood. Nothing has been improved in my area, except for the Gateway project (the Target, etc) and all that has brought is crime and homeless). Now we are being inundated with development that is not for us, but for those that can afford "luxury apartments".

The thing is, when a community is desireable (as a result of multiple factors, but which include…Read More good government), because of economic reality, housing expenses go up. West Hollywood has undergone a very successful nearly 3 decade transformation since cityhood, and shed most of the negative image it once had. Ergo, rents go up.
As a NYer in the 90s, and now WeHo resident, I found that I and many other NYers chose WeHo because it both is walkable like NYC and less expensive.

Thank you Dr. Clark for this excellent illustration. Despite its common association with disease in…Read More infants, children and adolescents, meningococcal transmission and epidemiology is highly fluid, with major fluctuations in the incidence of endemic disease and occurrence of outbreaks and epidemics. We are often caught off guard when we apply old parameters to new and diverse groups. It thus becomes imperative to tease out the true denominator.

Direct quote from Dr. Thomas Clark of the Center for Disease Control:
In NYC, we’re talking…Read More more on the order 13 or so cases last year. But, you might say, hey, that’s 13 cases for 8 million people, so who cares? But that’s not really correct. It’s not 8 million New Yorkers. It’s gay New Yorkers. And it’s only gay men who are getting sick, not lesbians, so now the number is cut down even fewer. And it’s not all gay men in NYC, it’s gay men in certain boroughs. And it’s not every gay men in those boroughs, it seems to be gay men in those boroughs who are sexually active and particularly using Web sites, phone apps, bars and partys to meet guys. That cuts down the number even further. So you’re now a lot closer to that 100,000 figure than you were when you thought this was about 8 million New Yorkers.
The uncertainty of the size of the community exposed to this disease is part of what worries public health professionals. It’s not possible to accurately define whether we’re talking 13 cases per 100,000, per 200,000 or per 50,000. So they err on the side of caution because this is such a particularly deadly variant of the disease, killing 1 in 3 who get it, rather than the normal 1 in 5. And in public health, you try to cut off disease before they become a huge problem. Thus you have to look at small numbers, and historically what those numbers tend to mean for the future, and act accordingly.

Yes, he's been called a carpetbagger. Doesn't he still reside in West Hollywood not Los Angeles?…Read More He participated in the State Assembly during the 2000-2006 period of massive deficits and fiscal negligence. Then off to L.A. where City Council members are paid an obscene amount of money and perks while he postures as a populist and the city nears bankruptcy. There is some talk that his next jump might be Yaroslavsky's lucrative office when he terms out. It's quite the profitable game at taxpayer expense.

And to clarify, my comment @5:34 clearly stated he barely won his 1st term, but you're…Read More apparently so quick on the draw to shill for him that you didn't bother to read carefully. The recent election you cited was for his 2nd term. His opponent got more than 1/2 the votes needed to defeat him while barely lifting a finger. have to say I love a good debate or discussion, freedom of speech and press and ideas are what has…Read More made this country great. And social media has leveled the field in the exchange of ideas and information. With that being said I got into a discussion about the WEHO city councils move to jump on the banning of plastic bags in our city under the feel good buzz words of its good for the environment. But to me when I look past the spin what I see now is that the supers markets get to charge 10 cents a bag now, where before they were free. Which makes them more money bottom line. Secondly paper bags were free before so why not have just banned plastic bags? Thirdly the real plastic monster is inside the super markets that are full of plastic everything because the large corporations have mastered the art of the cheap packing costs of plastic. Not to mention the re-usable bags are made of a heavier plastic which I think would stay larger in bigger pieces in the environment.....In the end a while ago I saw this video and was reminded of it today. it shows where the plastic monster lives in the environment, that being the packaging of soda liter tops etc. Take a few mins to watch it, its a very powerful story and the next time your at a super market look at all the plastic on the shelves and the ruse of making us all pay for a bag now which in the end makes the supper markets more money. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MN8JYhByVYg&feature=player_embedded

Thanks, “different Paul,” for the invitation to comment. You were doing a fine job in…Read More dealing with the most glaring omission in the original Patch report (since revised), that the owner of the Beverly Hills Hotel and The Bel Air Hotel is not just a "resident" of Brunei but as you point out is in fact the "infallible," " supreme ruler," "defender of Islamic Faith,” and "owner" of the fifth richest nation in the world.
All by way of agreeing that expecting any behavioral modification based on the economics of a boycott - even at $16 per martini, is futile. But it's not gay money that the Sultan of Brunei is after, it’s the cynicism he’s after.
What the Sultan wants is exactly what he got in many of the responses here - cynicism. Cynicism about the protest, the protesters, the Sultan's right to "earn a living" - regardless of who he exploits in the process, his "right" to run his country as he sees fit - regardless of who he oppresses. And most importantly, vis a vi the boycott of the ugly stepsisters “Beverly” and “Bel”, cynicism of the gay community as to the consequences of our buying choices for both our LGBT brethren half a world away and the disenfranchised Bel Air workers fired after 20 years so they could be replaced them with cheaper labor to pay for the old-girl’s multi-million dollar face lift..
