Historic Preservation Party at Hollywood Riviera Celebrates Swimming Pool Culture

The city's 2012 Historic Preservation Celebration hosts a party Tuesday from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Hollywood Riviera, one of the city's mid-Century architectural gems. The free party features a talk on "LA's Pool Culture."

Few images evoke the notion of the California Dream better than the swimming pool. In the mid 20th Century, the California Dream was sold to America based largely on that image of the swimming pool. As the Beverly Hillbillies theme song said, “swimming pools, movie stars.” Tuesday, as part of the 2012 Historic Preservation Celebration, the city is celebrating the swimming pool and all that it embodies by having a party around, what else but a swimming pool. But the swimming pool for this event isn’t just any swimming pool. It’s the pool at one of the city’s mid-Century architectural masterpieces, Hollywood Riviera. Built in 1954, the Hollywood Riviera was designed by famed architect Edward Fickett, FAIA. “LA’s Pool Culture” is the topic of…

Harvey should inspire all of us - straight or gay - he put his life where is mouth was and he walked the walked and he died the death. For me - and only for me - I do not speak for others - Harvey represents all that is honest and fine in any community. I will honor his name and his day.   more ›

Marriott asks for modifications to the already approved Sunset-Doheny Hotel, where it now plans to open the West Coast flagship of its new Edition brand of luxury hotels. The Planning Commission approves those modifications.

West Hollywood’s Planning Commission gave its approval to modifications to the planned Sunset-Doheny Hotel at its Thursday night meeting. In March 2010, the City Council approved the 11-story, mixed-use hotel project at 9040 Sunset Blvd. (at Doheny Drive) with 148 hotel rooms, 20 condominiums, 18,000 square feet of retail space and 5,800 square feet of conference meeting rooms. Now, the Marriott hotel chain wants to operate the hotel as the West Coast flagship of its new “Edition” brand of high-end, luxury-service hotels. The chain also has Edition hotels planned for London, Miami and New York City. With a …

Judge Hears Arguments in Extradition Case Against Mother of L.A. Arson Suspect

A trial date has yet to be set for Dorothee Burkhart who is wanted on a host of fraud charges in Germany.

A federal judge heard arguments Thursday but made no decision on whether to order the extradition of the mother of a man suspected of setting dozens of fires in Hollywood, West Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley over New Year's weekend. Dorothee Burkhart, 53, is fighting extradition to her native Germany, where she is wanted on a host of fraud charges. Contrary to her behavior at previous hearings, the woman sat quietly, taking notes. Michael Belter, Burkhart's attorney, argued against extradition on several fronts. First, the woman has been subpoenaed by her son's defense as a key witness in the arson case, the attorney said, adding that he had questions about the statute of limitations on the German fraud charges. He also said his …
