West Hollywood Seeks Volunteers for 2nd Annual MLK Day of Service

This year's project includes landscaping and general maintenance and upkeep for West Hollywood Elementary.

The city of West Hollywood says it will join hundreds of communities across the nation by hosting a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Jan. 16.

In commemoration of the 26th anniversary of the MLK federal holiday, the city is joining forces with Friends of West Hollywood Elementary and the Sunset Strip Businesses Association in a beautification and maintenance project at .

Volunteers are needed to help with landscaping, walkway repairs and painting at the K-6th grade public school located at 970 N. Hammond St. off Sunset Boulevard. There will be four-hour shifts from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President's national call to service initiative. "It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems," according to the 2012 MLK Day website.

At last year's first annual event, volunteers helped package and organize food items for JFS/SOVA food pantry, which has a location in West Hollywood and offers free groceries and supportive services to over 10,000 individuals each month.

This year's Day of Service comes during a crucial time of budget cuts for public schools. The Sunset Strip Music Festival raised $3,210 this past year to support arts and music education programs at West Hollywood Elementary, the Sunset Strip Business Association announced on its website.
