Blog: Dolores Huerta, Maxine Waters and Mark Leno Endorse Me

Please vote for me on March 5th!

Friend --

I am proud to announce the endorsements of Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, and Senator Mark Leno.

Throughout my career, I have been proud to stand with children, families and communities as they struggle for their full rights and access for all of our public institutions. I have always believed that until all of our students and their families have equal rights and equal access the education community cannot rest.

Over the last 48 hours, three trailblazing leaders have endorsed our campaign for collaborative transformation of our public schools and excellence for all children.

Dolores Huerta, the Presidential Medal Award Winner, Pioneering Labor, Women’s and Civil Rights icon and warrior for the human rights of all children called to endorse me on Tuesday night. Delores has known my 20 years of work on behalf of immigrant rights and the Dream Act. Delores is one of my heroines and she inspires me every day. It was one of the great honors of my life to hear her voice embracing our vision.

The Hon. Maxine Waters is one of our nation’s leading voices on Civil Rights, voting rights and economic justice. She has lead struggle after struggle to bring economic opportunity to the most highly impacted areas of Los Angeles. Maxine’s voice has galvanized community leaders for generations. I am so proud that Representative Waters has endorsed our campaign because she understands I fight for all children, especially the most vulnerable every day. It is amazing to have Maxine stand with us.

The Hon. State Senator Mark Leno has been a remarkable leader for environmental justice and LGBT rights in the State Legislature. Senator Leno has been a fearless warrior to make sure California is first in the nation in standing for the full access to services for LGBT youth in our schools. Senator Leno’s landmark SB48 lead the way for the nation to include the stories of LGBT leaders and families in our school curricula. SB 48 was the inspiration for my landmark anti-bullying resolution (link) that established LAUSD as the nation’s leading school district in providing safe, supportive and embracing school environments for LGBT youth. I am humbled by Senator Leno’s endorsement.
