Varsity Gay League Celebrates 6th Year

The LGBT recreational sports league gets set to start its bowling and kickball season and will march in the 2013 LA Pride parade.

The Weho-based Varsity Gay League (VGL) turns six years old this year and is about to kick off its popular bowling and kickball seasons, the group announced Tuesday.

VGL has experienced consistent growth and continually established ties within the Los Angeles LGBT community. The league serves as a unique social and athletically-minded alternative to the club scene.

“We created something that was not there,” VGL founder Will Hackner said in a statement. “We’re proud of our growth, including the many requests to form VGL leagues in other states. We’re happy to offer so many social and athletic alternatives to the LGBT community outside of the club scene, and it’s great that we even have straight participants, too, which diversifies our leagues. We’re creating community and having fun while doing it.”

With consistent growth over the last six years, VGL is the only group to offer and expand its roster of seasonal sports leagues, including bowling and kickball, along with its unique events, tournaments and range of recreational activities.

Some annual VGL highlights include the Beer Olympics, Easter egg hunts, video game nights, poker tournaments, Laser Tag, trampoline dodgeball, scavenger hunts, Quidditch and capture the flag.
