Fairfax Hosts Annual Hoops Classic June 27

The Lions open the eight-team boys tournament against CIF champion La Canada.

Fairfax High boys basketball head coach Harvey Kitani probably wishes he could have a "do over" in regards to last season. The Lions have been perennial powers in the City Section for years but the 2010-11 campaign did not exactly live up to expectations.

Fairfax (17-10) finished a disappointing fourth place in the Western League and lost 59-34 to eventual finalist Westchester in the quarterfinals of the Division I playoffs. The good news for the Lions is that all but four players return in 2011-12, including All-City point guard Landon Drew.

The team will get its first chance to impress when it hosts the 25th Annual Nike Fairfax Summer Basketball Classic June 27-July 2 at Fairfax High. The tournament is loaded with top teams from throughout the Southland, including CIF state Division I champion Santa Ana Mater Dei, Southern Section Division 1AA champion Long Beach Poly, Southern Section Division 1A champion Los Angeles Loyola, Southern Section Division 3AA champion La Canada, Southern Section Division 3A champion North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, Southern Section Division 4AA champion Orange Lutheran and Southern Section Division 4A winner Westlake Village Oaks Christian.
