Fairfax Girls Hoops Falls in Semis

The Lions' bid for a City championship ends with a 65-52 loss to Carson.

The 2010-11 season as a whole has been a success but Friday's City Section Division I semifinal ended in disappointment for the Fairfax High girls' basketball team.

The Lions' run for a section title came to an end in the South Bay as they lost to second-seeded Carson, 65-52. Seeded third out of 16 teams in Division I, Fairfax (25-9) won the Western League title and, by making the semifinals, qualifies for the state playoffs.

Fairfax shared the league title with Los Angeles CES last year and lost to LA Dorsey, 63-60, in the first round of the Division I playoffs. Two years ago, it reached the Division semifinals, losing to eventual-champion Chatsworth.

On Friday, the Lions dug too deep a hole to climb out of. They trailed 16-10 at the end of the first quarter and 40-27 at halftime. They cut their deficit to 10 points going into the fourth quarter, but the defending champion Colts (18-10) held them off thanks to 15 points apiece by Chante Miles and Janitah Iamaleava.

For all the attention the Fairfax boys' program has garnered under coach Harvey Kitani (until this season the boys had been a perennial power), girls coach Judi Edwards has built quite a powerhouse herself. The Lady Lions have won 18 or more games in five consecutive seasons.
