Weho's Voting Districts Are Changing: What Does That Mean for You?

The California Redistricting Commission releases a draft plan with new state electoral districts on Friday. Here is what you need to know about Weho and the new districts.

WHAT:

After two years of work, the 14-member California Citizen's Redistricting Commission released draft plans for new congressional and state districts for the entire state last week.

The plans show new boundaries for California's 53 congressional districts, 40 state senate districts and 80 state assembly districts, as well as districts for the state Board of Equalization, which handles taxation issues.

The boundaries are in the draft state now and there will be a public input process.  The final districts will be released in August.

It means you could find yourself part of a new congressional or state district. And it means you could find yourself suddenly part of the majority (or minority) politically.

OBSERVATIONS ON NEW DISTRICTS:

In the U.S. House of Representatives, Weho is represented by Democratic power player Henry Waxman in a district that includes Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Malibu, Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Pacific Palisades and Topanga. Under a new proposal, Weho's district would extend as far east as Downtown Los Angeles.

For the state Assembly, the plan is to keep Weho in the heavily Democratic District 42, represented by Assemblymember Mike Feuer, with Beverly Hills, Malibu and Marina del Rey. Under the new plan, Weho would share a district with Santa Monica and Malibu, losing Calabasas and Agoura Hills.

West Hollywood is currently part of the 23rd Senate District, represented by Democrat Fran Pavley. Under the new Senate district, Weho would join Beach Cities Redondo Beach, Torrance, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Marina Del Rey and Long Beach, represented by Democrat Ted Lieu in the 28th District.
