Weho Seeks to Keep House of Blues

The city says it hopes the entertainment venue's current location can be retained despite the approval of a residential and commercial project for the property.

West Hollywood hopes to retain the House of Blues at its current Sunset Strip location or find another spot for the entertainment venue nearby, the city said Thursday. The announcement follows the City Council's approval Tuesday of a residential and commercial project known as Sunset Time that would encompass the House of Blues property.

The House of Blues has been on the Sunset Strip since 1994. It has a lease that extends until 2012, at which time the owners have an option to renew for 13 more years, until 2025. The Sunset Time development agreement stipulates that no construction can begin for at least 10 years.

Now that the City Council has approved Sunset Time, which would include a boutique hotel, condominium units, a  live entertainment venue and other commercial space, the property's owner will be able to seek financing and begin to explore operators for the project.

"No demolition of existing buildings will occur until construction financing is secure and building permits have been issued, a process that is estimated to take at least one year and potentially longer," said the city's announcement.
