A tribute to the rock guitarist Thursday will kick off the Sunset Strip Music Festival.

The city of West Hollywood will honor the legacy of a Guns N' Roses guitarist by declaring Thursday as "Slash Day" in West Hollywood.

The Sunset Strip Music Festival kicks off that night with a special tribute to Slash at the House of Blues. Slash is being honored for his contributions to the history of the Sunset Strip as well as the music industry. The tribute event kicks off the three-day music festival.

"It is truly an honor to celebrate the musical achievements of one of our own native sons," said Mayor John Heilman.

Guns N' Roses, which also included Axl Rose, Izzy Stradlin, Steven Adler and Duff McKagan, is  regarded as one of the greatest rock 'n' roll bands of all time, according to Anthony Bozza, who wrote a book about Slash.

The band formed in the early '80s and recorded and performed until the mid-'90s, sometimes at the Whisky A Go-Go on the Sunset Strip.

Throughout his career, Slash has collaborated with various artists such as Michael Jackson on the songs "Black and White" and "Give In to Me." He's also worked with Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Rod Stewart, Lenny Kravitz and Bob Dylan.

His first solo album, Slash, was released in April.
