The rainbow flag that was hung in June on West Hollywood City Hall was removed last week, according to the Los Angeles Times

The flag, which symbolizes gay pride, was removed after months of debate by the city council, which has four gay men who hold seats. An estimated 40 percent of the city’s residents are gay men.

West Hollywood “belongs to all of us,” Councilman John Duran said at a previous city council meeting, according to the Times. “It’s not just a city of gay men. It belongs to heterosexual people as well, and City Hall belongs to everybody in this community, gay or straight, and let’s not ever give the impression that City Hall has become exclusive to only one part of the West Hollywood community.”

The news has been reported on numerous blogs and websites, with mixed reactions. Here's a few headlines:

I don't understand why flying our flag and showing pride in the community which we live shows ownership in any aspect in this situation.

It is just another aspect of the once beloved community that is gone from the landscape. Just BIG corporate stores like Walgreens, Target or big white ugly unnecessary libraries. No boutique shops or uniqueness.

If you want to fight for equality, you can not display separation or self discrimination. There is room to display our pride, but the city hall, in my opinion should be acting in representation of everyone living in the city

time to replace John Duran - the key word here, John, is RAINBOW - as in many colors - as in many different types of people. Lord help us if you can't even get this concept - who knows what else you're missing.

I was under the impressive West Hollywood was a gay city. They ran with that banner in promoting cityhood. The first gay city back then.
