Proposition 8 Demonstration Set for Thursday

Gay rights activists, who hope to bolster the fight for same-sex marriage while such unions remain on hold, will gather at Santa Monica and San Vicente boulevards at 6 p.m.

Gay rights activists will gather Thursday at 6 p.m. on the corner of Santa Monica and San Vicente boulevards to protest against the postponement of same-sex marriage in California.

"There's a frustration because people should have gotten married," said Arturo Sernas, who is organizing the demonstration.

Aug. 18 would have been the first day that same-sex marriages resumed in California if a federal appeals court hadn't granted a stay in the Proposition 8 case, blocking such unions in California while an appeal is considered. If the ban on gay marriage is lifted, it won't be before December.

"These actions serve as a reminder that the LGBT community will continue to fight until full federal equality has been achieved," said Sernas. The activists will hold this emergency demonstration in West Hollywood as part of a broader effort to respond to the extended stay on same-sex marriage.

"The time has come to mobilize the strength and numbers of the LGBT rights movement and its allies," said Sernas. "We're being forced to wait by these marginal forces that have nothing to gain, or lose, if California starts to marry gay couples."
