Prang Will Be New Mayor Come April

City Council votes Jeff Prang in as new mayor, with Abbe Land as mayor pro tem.

The City Council chose Jeff Prang and Abbe Land to serve as the city’s new mayor and mayor pro tem, respectively, during its meeting on Monday night. The two will be sworn into office in a ceremony taking place on April 16.

The five City Council members rotate in one-year terms as mayor. Since Prang has served for the past year as mayor pro tem, many assumed he would automatically move into the office of mayor, but such a succession is not automatically given. This requires the councilmembers' vote.

At Monday’s meeting, Land nominated Prang for mayor. After Prang won by acclamation, Councilman John D’Amico then nominated Land to serve as mayor pro tem. Land also won by acclamation.

Prang later told Weho Patch he was honored to serve the city.

“I am very proud to have been selected by my colleagues to serve as mayor. This will be my fourth time,” said Prang, who was first elected to City Council in 1997.

Prang is looking forward to the his coming year as mayor.

“We’ve got lots of things happening over the course of next year—the opening of West Hollywood Park and the presidential election," he said. "Also, hopefully we can look forward to the revival from a couple years of bad economy, which will invigorate new life and energy into the city.”

Land told Patch she is equally honored.

“I’m very delighted that council voted for me,” said Land, who has been on the council for 20 years (1986-1997 and 2003-present).

The councilwoman said she is looking forward to working with Prang.

“Jeff has always been a great mayor," Land said, "and I’ve enjoyed when I’ve had an opportunity to mayor pro tem with him.”
