More Local Groups Endorse Council Incumbents

A city employees' union and tenants' rights organization back Prang and Duran.

More local organizations announced their support this week for the re-election of Mayor Jeffrey Prang and Councilman John Duran.

West Hollywood municipal employees represented by the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 3339 and the Coalition for Economic Survival (CES), a tenants' rights organization have come out in favor of the two incumbents running in the 2013 West Hollywood City Council election.

“Following a process in which we questioned all of the candidates, our union was convinced that both Mr. Prang and Mr. Duran have a vision for the city that is in the best interests of all residents and reflects the progressive values and good governance that define this community,” union President Janet Jimenez said in a statement.

"In this election there are a number of candidates who lack experience or knowledge and could easily be influenced by landlord and developer lobbyists," CES Executive Director Larry Gross said in a statement. "One perennial candidate has an anti-rent control track record and would be a disaster for renters and the city as a whole if elected. This is why renters must vote on March 5, and we strongly urge that they cast their ballots for Jeff Prang and John Duran."

In recent weeks Prang and Duran received endorsements from local political clubs.

The employees' union also joined CES, the Los Angeles County Democratic Party and the Weho political clubs in supporting a "no" vote on the ballot measure that aims to establish term limits for West Hollywood council members.

Jiminez called term limits "undemocratic" and added that “voters should be able to cast their ballots for the candidate whom they believe is most qualified.”

Editor's note: This story incorrectly reported that the L.A. County Democratic Party endorsed Weho incumbents. Party members are scheduled to vote on endorsing West Hollywood council candidates next week.

No doubt these groups have kick backs from the crooked council members Duran & Prang. The city will suffer greatly if these two are re-elected. Folks please remember the mean, awful things Duran said at the height of last years Plummer Park meetings regarding the renovations. Those comments were directed to the people and he said what he felt. Time to remind him of this upon election day.

City employees endorse incumbents... now that's news flash! Does anyone really expect them to do otherwise? As for CES, do they really believe none of the challenger candidates have any experience and could be swayed by developers? How much developer money is going to support Prang and Duran? Are we to believe that Duran's $200,000+ campaign fund doesn't include developer money? Surely we're not that naive.
Profes Shivers February 08, 2013 at 06:04 PM
I attended the forum and walked away with window signs for Martin and Borelli. I'm going online now to send them some money. Prang and Duran are tools for the moneyed interests and have NO concern for us renters or for anyone interested in quality of life issues.
Riley February 08, 2013 at 07:53 PM
@ Profes Shivers, excellent choices! I watched on tv and thought SAM BORELLI and and STEVE MARTIN were the clear winners. Everyone needs to get out and VOTE. We cannot afford to split the vote either. Mr. Garzilli should hop in his PRT with his conceal carry permit and head out of town.
Riley February 08, 2013 at 08:03 PM
@Paul, Duran was at it again at the forum. His snide comments about how they had "60 meetings" about Plummer Park and that they had listened to the community...is he joking? He left out the part that apparently at all those meetings everyone involved agreed to chop down/kill all the trees in Plummer Park was a good idea as long as it provided more parking.
Riley February 08, 2013 at 08:10 PM
@Susie Shannon, well let's hope they come to their senses and endorse Steve Martin and Sam Borelli, because if the LACDP sticks with the incumbents who do not represent the people and are taking buckets of money from the Republican Developers, then their endorsement is worthless. WeHo and this election should be non-partisan anyway. Mr. Duran is an arrogant, disrespectful and a hot-head - just ask Torie Osborn.
Ali February 08, 2013 at 09:46 PM
I have been ill and missed the forum, but I would be interested in knowing why the CES thinks Steve Martin, whom I am planning on voting for, is bad for rent control? Our current rent stabilization board is a joke anyways.
Rudolf Martin February 08, 2013 at 10:20 PM
@Riley, Paul, yes i did hear about him recycling the old "60 meetings" line. 60 meetings? he is referring to meetings where the most of the few residents who attended say their input was ignored. ed garren wrote a fascinating account of this right here in the patch. fake 'stakeholders' were designated by 'the city' to champion their plan. and regarding two key commissions that should have had major input (HPC and East Side PAC): when Plummer Park was on their agenda it was under 'receive and file'. no input wanted. it's an extremely disingenuous argument and it's the reason he has to go. Duran has been consistently hostile to the residents on this issue (not surprising when outside developers are exclusively funding his campaign). once voted out of office he will be able to better focus on fighting his ongoing investigation by the County DA for abusing the City Credit Card.

BELOW IS PART OF JEFF PRANG'S STATEMENT ON THE SAMPLE BALLOT ON WEHO.ORG....WHY ISN'T THIS THE PRANG THE REST OF US KNOW???? My record reflects my common sense and consistent commitment to you and your neighborhood. While I am for smart growth, I have only supported projects that minimize the impact on traffic and parking and opposed those that don’t. I have been the leading advocate for landmark preservation and practical restraint against overdevelopment.

If it's not broke, don't fix it. West Hollywood is an amazingly successful community, and much of the credit for this belongs to our city government. I have yet to see any compelling reason to make any changes. I suspect WeHo's voters will agree with this assessment next month.
me February 09, 2013 at 10:16 PM
i suppose "successful" only means money in the bank???....i'm going to LMFAO when their robo-garage toy breaks down....might even add an "i told you so" when i do....when will they learn it's better to involve civic input rather than the ramrod approach to everything???
me February 09, 2013 at 10:18 PM
My hope is for the rest of the candidates to bow out gracefully now and endorse steve martin and sam borelli so they have a fighting chance to win against the incumbents....in the long run, these guys will have a better chance of getting elected in the future if we can first get rid of the "frick & frack show" (duran/prang)..... i hereby appeal to christopher, rusty, nick, tristan and tom to do the right thing and shut down your campaign's now and throw your support behind steve and sam
Ali February 09, 2013 at 11:30 PM
@ me I have been reading a lot of your comments recently on a variety of subjects. You are getting more and more egotistical and antagonistic with each. May I suggest you tone it down a bit? Just because you support certain candidates (which I also support), asking the other candidates to bow down and close down their campaigns at this point in time is not your call to make or suggest. Tone it down whoever you are. And stop the attacks on Scott Ferguson, even if he is a nay sayer to whatever you say. He has a right to his opinion.
me February 09, 2013 at 11:56 PM
you may suggest it, but i won't....you have a right to your opinion, as do i....if the patch deems any of my posts offensive, they will delete them....as for scott ferguson, it goes both ways in case you care to look back at both of our responses to each other....oh, and may i direct you to this comment YOU made to scott recently: Ali 5:07 pm on Thursday, February 7, 2013 Scott, I suggest you read the post above yours. Especially the part about marked or unmarked crosswalks. Why must you always be the fly in the soup?

AND THERE'S ALSO THIS GEM FROM YOU ALI: Ali 3:02 pm on Saturday, January 5, 2013 And Paul.....don't say those words to Jose....you are the one most often acting like a jack ass on these boards saying stupid stuff.
me February 10, 2013 at 12:18 AM
....AND THIS OFFENSIVE GEM REGARDING HOMELESS PEOPLE: Ali 2:58 pm on Monday, October 8, 2012 I'm wondering what services for the homeless THAT part of WeHo offers, or does the City just shove them all over to the East Side so the gay people don't have to look at them?
me February 10, 2013 at 12:19 AM
....AND THIS ONE: Ali 6:58 pm on Saturday, October 6, 2012 That is a pretty stupid comment. It will cost you a lot more.

....ANOTHER RESPONSE TO SCOTT..... Ali 2:41 pm on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 Scott, do you have to be negative nellie on everything?
me February 10, 2013 at 12:22 AM
.....AN THIS.... Ali 7:37 pm on Sunday, August 12, 2012 Scott, candidates say all kinds of things. But once in office, many become a different animal altogether. Perhaps that is what happened to John D'Amico. This is the second instance where he has gone along with the crowd and you've questioned it. Just because he didn't dissent doesn't mean it isn't a problem. I admire your naivete in this crazy world. But it is time to wake up and smell the coffee.
me February 10, 2013 at 12:24 AM
....WHINE ON?..... Ali 6:27 pm on Saturday, July 7, 2012 I am so tired of hearing you whine jon. Do you ever have anything positive to say?
me February 10, 2013 at 12:27 AM
"YOU PEOPLE ARE DISGUSTING".....AND "SHUT UP"...... Ali 10:55 pm on Saturday, March 17, 2012 You people are disgusting. People come from all over the world to run in our Marathon and you are all so self-absorbed that you can't be bothered with it. So what if streets are closed off for a few hours. The pro runners are top athletes. And for all the others, it is a major accomplishment that takes a lot of training to complete a marathon course. So...to all you whiners, take alternate courses or just stay home and find other things to do for this ONE DAY A YEAR and shut up.

"READING COMPREHENSION ISN'T YOUR STRONG SUIT, IS IT? Ali 3:12 pm on Thursday, February 9, 2012 Jon, the year old story had nothing to do with his filming crew. It was about Cavanaugh flying his personal helicopter and landing on top of the Sofitel, which was not permitted for personal landings, just so he could get to his studio faster than driving. And what are you raving about "West Hollywood Studios" being a fictitious name. Nowhere does the story refer to that. The story says the suit is against the producer's West Hollywood studio, not "West Hollywood Studios". Reading comprehension isn't your strong suit, is it?
me February 10, 2013 at 12:30 AM
"OFF YOUR ROCKER"..... Ali 3:17 pm on Saturday, February 4, 2012 Wendy, you are off your rocker. And I suggest you read this article again. You twist facts and make them up as you go.

I love this city...So many amazing and positive changes in the last 20 years. This young city is a success.
Profes Shivers February 12, 2013 at 10:10 PM
I don't hear @me like that at all. He makes good points and good sense. I wouldn't be surprised to learn at some point that a candidate or two was put up just to split the anti-incumbent vote!
Profes Shivers February 12, 2013 at 10:12 PM
. . . IF you're a developer and/or friend of the entrenched councilors!

SHOCKING!!!....when you see it all on one page like this.....yes, WHO owns weho is a good question!!!....can you say {{{{{{{ D-E-V-E-L-O-P-E-R-S }}}}}}} boys and girls???....the city is clearly for sale and our city council members are selling it all off one block at a time.....who wants to live in a concrete jungle of buildings 6 or more stories up creating a dark tunnel along santa monica blvd, sunset blvd and la brea ave????.....not to mention the insane gridlock of cars on all streets in every direction....do the RESIDENTS really want a Mini- Manhattan???...ohhhh yes, that's right, the city doesn't ASK its residents want they want.....they just ramrod their developer friends projects down our throats....thankfully, a lot of people are starting to fight back against this insanity.......join the fight now people, once the deal is done, there's nothing you can do but choke on the mess the council has created.....GREAT JOB putting this page together folks!!!
Profes Shivers February 22, 2013 at 04:21 AM
Like the huge size of the replacement for the Silver Spoon without ANY hearing at all!!! Parking accommodations? Height change? The incumbents have to GO!!!
