City of West Hollywood Recognizes Transgender Awareness Month

Events will be occurring all month in honor of transgendered people.

City Councilmember John Duran helped raise a flag Monday morning on one of West Hollywood City Hall’s flag poles to mark the kickoff of Transgender Awareness Month this November, Frontiers reported. Duran was joined by Karina Samala and Jaye Johnson, Chair and Co-Chair of West Hollywood’s Transgender Advisory Board.

According to the city's website, the following events will take place in November:

  • Transgender Awareness March, Sunday, November 3, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. The march begins at Plummer Park, 7737 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood and ends at the Transgender Memorial at the intersection of Santa Monica Blvd. & Crescent Heights. Free parking available at Plummer Park. 
  • The City of West Hollywood’s Transgender Advisory Board’s Monthly Meeting, Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at 7:00 pm. in the West Hollywood City Council Chambers, 625 N. San Vicente Blvd., West Hollywood. Validated parking available. 
  • Transgender Economic Empowerment Job and Resource Fair, Thursday, November 7, 2013 at the National Council of Jewish Women from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., 543 N. Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles. Admission is free. 
  • Transgender Film Screening, Saturday, November 9, 2013 in the West Hollywood City Council Chambers from 2:00 pm. to 4:00 p.m., 625 N. San Vicente Blvd., West Hollywood. Validated parking available. 
  • Transgender Wellness & Wellbeing Conference, Saturday November 16, 2013 at the National Council of Jewish Women from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., 543 N. Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles. Admission is free. 
  • Transgender Day of Remembrance, Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. in the West Hollywood Library Autocourt, 625 N. San Vicente Blvd., West Hollywood. Outdoor reception to include speakers from the transgender community, City Councilmembers and City Officials. Various transgender performers to provide entertainment. The event will conclude with a reading of the names of transgender people who have lost their lives due to hatred and violence. Admission is free.
