West Hollywood Sheriff's detectives are currently conducting an investigation into the activities of Jason James Murphy, a registered sex offender and Weho resident who has been working under another name.
The Los Angeles Times reported Thursday that Murphy, 35, who has spent nearly a decade casting actors, including children, in films (Super 8, Cheaper by the Dozen 2, The School of Rock), served five years in prison for the 1996 kidnapping and molesting of an 8-year-old boy in suburban Seattle.
Murphy underwent sex-offender counseling, LA Times reported, then moved to California in 2005, where he was registered as a sex offender, making his full name and photo known. In his professional career, however, Murphy continues to go by Jason James.
"This person is currently registered as a sex offender with the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station," said Lt. Lawrence Del Mese of the West Hollywood Sheriff's Station in a statement. "He has been determined by detectives to be currently in compliance with penal code section 290."
West Hollywood Station detectives are currently conducting an investigation into Murphy’s activities in order to determine if criminal acts have occurred. Officials are asking for the public’s help identifying any crimes involving Murphy.
