Wednesday's Scoop: Jane Lynch, Bill Maher, Black Diversity and Queer Art

Comics Jane Lynch, Bill Maher and more tell jokes to benefit PETA. Special screening of the 1974 documentary "Black Is . . . Black Ain't" at the Weho Library and queer art discussion at the Schindler House.

Stand Up for Animals

The way our society treats animals is no laughing matter, yet a group of comedians manages to find humor in it nonetheless at the annual “Stand Up for Animals” show. Comics Bill Maher, Jane Lynch, Carol Leifer, Jeffrey Ross and Marc Maron are scheduled to perform, while Fred Willard serves as host. Showtime is 8 p.m. at the . Proceeds benefit People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

Black LGBT Identity

Director Marlon Riggs’ 1974 documentary Black Is . . . Black Ain’t screens as part of the One City/One Pride series. A searing film that rejoices in black diversity, Black Is . . . Black Ain’t offers important insights into sexism, patriarchy, homophobia, colorism and cultural nationalism in the black family, church and other black institutions. The screening starts at 7 p.m. in the Council Chamber in , followed by a panel discussion. The screening is free.

Queer Art Talk

For a discussion of queer art and literature, the Schindler House is the place to be as the MAK Center for Art and Architecture presents “Q.E.D.: Part 2, Authentic Object.” A writer, an artist and a critic will have a discussion about contemporary issues facing queer art and literature. The conversation starts at 7 p.m. at the , 835 N. Kings Road. $7 per person.

Lesbian Discussion Group

“Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are” is the discussion topic for the second meeting of “SHE,” the new lesbian discussion group. Designed to provide an open space to build relationships, engage in dialogue and find creative solutions for issues currently facing lesbians, the group meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Meeting Room in the . Free.

Public Facilities Commission

The Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. in . Items on the agenda include an Urban Forest Management Plan and the Capital Works Plan for the fiscal years 2012-13 and 2013-14. The meeting is open to the public.
