Tuesday's Scoop: 'Young & Restless' Star, Block Parties, Comedy Benefit

Actress Jeanne Cooper, star of the CBS soap "The Young and the Restless" signs copies of her new book. National Night Out offers block parties around the city. A special comedy show benefits a comedian shot in the Colorado theater shooting.

Restless Lady

For the past 39 years, actress Jeanne Cooper has portrayed grand dame Katherine Chancellor on the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless. With multiple marriages, scandals, look-alikes stealing identities, returns from the dead, alcoholism and on-air facelifts as the Genoa City matriarch, Cooper has lots of tales to tell and gossip to dish. And dish she does in her new book, Not Young, Still Restless: A Memoir. Cooper discusses and signs copies of her book at 7 p.m. at .

It’s a city-wide celebration of neighborhoods as 10 different neighborhoods hold block parties as part of the annual National Night Out Against Crime. With great food to nosh on, it’s a chance for neighbors to get to know each other in an effort to build neighborhood spirit and fight crime too. City Council members, Sheriff’s deputies and Fire officials will make the rounds to the various parties. After the block parties, a free screening of the 2011 Academy Award-winning best picture The Artist will take place at 8 p.m. in .

Women and Books

The monthly Women and Books book club, meets to discuss the August reading – She’s Come Undone: A Novel by Wally Lamb. The coming-of-age tale follows an overweight teenage girl as she goes from an abusive childhood through the turbulent 60s and beyond, finding strength in each obstacle she encounters. The discussion starts at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the . Admission is free.

Comedy Benefit

Comedian Caleb Medley was one of those injured in the Colorado theatre shooting, shot in the head and currently in a medically induced coma. With no insurance and many bills to pay, a group of comedians is holding a benefit show for Medley, his wife and infant son, born just days after the shooting. Comics Chris D’Elia (NBC’s Whitney), Adam DeVine (Workaholics), Erik Griffin (Workaholics), T.J. Miller (She's Out Of My League), Dom Irrera (The Big Lebowski) and Finesse Mitchell (Disney's A.N.T. Farm) and others are scheduled to tell jokes starting at 8 p.m. at the .
