Each Tuesday, the hosts its open mike night, offering wannabe comedians a chance to try out their act on the same stage where big timers like Jim Carrey, the Wayans Brothers and Jamie Foxx got their start. Open mike night starts at 6:30 p.m. Would-be performers should arrive at 5 p.m. to sign up for a chance to perform the in following Tuesday’s show.
A dark comedy set in New York, Balls: A Novel tells the story of the 30-year-old songwriter/lounge-player who falls in love with a woman far younger and more musically gifted than he is. His insecurities about that relationship only intensify when he discovers he has testicular cancer. Author Julian Tepper discusses and signs copies of Balls: A Novel at 7 p.m. at Book Soup.
The Empty Family, a collection of short stories by Irish author Colm Toibin, will be discussed at this month’s Lambda Literary Book Club gathering. Many of the nine short stories contained in The Empty Family deal with the theme of loneliness and a gay man is the central figure in several of the stories. The monthly Lambda Literary Book Club meets 7-8:30 p.m. at the West Hollywood Library.
