Tuesday's Scoop: Lenny Bruce's Legacy, Library Art and Mastering Money

Laugh Factory screens a new documentary about controversial comic Lenny Bruce. Weho Library offers a guided tour of its art. New women's workshop series about understanding finances kicks off.

Greetings and welcome to City Scoop. Today is Tuesday, May 8, the 129th day of 2012. Here’s what’s going on in West Hollywood today.

Lenny Bruce Legacy

The hosts the LA premier of the new documentary Looking for Lenny an in-depth look at the legacy of the late, controversial comedian Lenny Bruce. The film features comedians including Robin Williams, Richard Lewis, Roseanne Barr, Phyllis Diller and Christopher Titus talking about Bruce’s influence on their comedy. The screening is at 10 p.m., followed by stand-up comedy from Andy Kindler, Elon Gold and Chris D'Elia.

Library Art Tour

Andrew Campbell, the city’s Cultural Affairs Administrator, leads a free guided tour of the art at the . Campbell will discuss the murals by Shepard Fairey, Retna and Kenny Scharf on the library parking structure walls as well as the art inside the library. A free bus departs at 10 a.m. and returns at noon. The tour will be translated simultaneously into Russian.

Mastering Money

A workshop series designed to help women gain a better understanding of their finances kicks off tonight. “Mastering Your Money” is facilitated by Kelly Alexander, Certified Financial Planner and Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. Workshop topics include investing in the stock market, planning for retirement and choosing investments for a 401(K). The five-session series meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month through July 10. Tonight’s session runs 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Senior Lounge in the Community Center in . The group is free.

Walter Mosley Books

New York Times best-selling crime-fiction novelist Walter Mosley (best known for his Easy Rawlins detective series) will present and sign copies of his two short novels The Gift of Fire and On the Head of a Pin at starting at 7 p.m. Gift of Fire concerns the Greek titan Prometheus, who brought the gift of fire to man, walking the streets of present-day South Central Los Angeles. On the Head of a Pin concerns two technicians working on advanced animatronics technology that allows long-dead film stars to appear in modern movies, indistinguishable from live stars.

Commission Meeting

The Human Services Commission meets at 6 p.m. in the Community Room in City Hall. The Commission will receive a presentation from Jewish Family Service, then discuss nutritional support services for people living with HIV/AIDS and a new HIV prevention campaign. The meeting is open to the public.
