Thursday's Scoop: Sarah Silverman, PJ Morton and a Block of Melrose

Sarah Silverman and friends perform at Largo, while Maroon 5's PJ Morton is at the House of Blues. Meanwhile the Planning Commission will decide on a new showroom building slated for Melrose Avenue.

The Planning Commission will decide the fate of almost an entire block along Melrose Avenue. A developer is requesting to tear down six of the eight buildings in the block on the southside of Melrose between Westmount Drive and Westbourne Drive (across from the old Bodhi Tree Bookstore location). In its place, the developer wants to construct a 30,000 square-foot, two-story building for wholesale and furnishing showrooms, plus two levels of underground parking. Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers in West Hollywood Library.

Black Superheroes

Black superheroes such as Black Panther, Black Lightening, Luke Cage, Storm and Blade didn’t begin appearing in comic books until the early 1970s. Author Adilifu Nama believes those early black superheroes had a profound impact on pop culture, radical identity and racial portrayals in other media, ultimately giving rise to the imagery of President Barack Obama as a superhero. Nama discusses and signs copies of his new book Super Black: American Pop Culture and Black Superheroes at 7 p.m. at Book Soup. The event is free.

PJ Morton

Maroon 5′s Grammy-award-winning keyboardist PJ Morton released his debut EP titled Following My First Mind at the end of March. Now the New Orleans native is touring to support the album, stopping in at the House of Blues for a 7:30 p.m. show. Honor Society and Dawn Richard open for him.

Sarah Silverman and Friends

Each month, comedian Sarah Silverman brings her zany but oh-so-precise observations about life to Largo at the Coronet Theatre. She also always brings with her a slew of comic friends, making for an outrageous night. This month, Silverman is joined by Chris Hardwick, Jeffrey Ross and Bill Burr. Doors open at 7 p.m. Showtime is 8:30 p.m.

Burlesque Show

Hamburger Mary’s offers "House Of Burlesque," an all-female burlesque show. Los Angeles' sexiest dancers, including Delilah DeMilo, will be on stage for a sultry and provocative night. Serving as Master of Ceremonies is drag king Landon Cider. Show starts at 10 p.m. No cover but reservations recommended.
