Saturday's Scoop: Park Reopening, Gay Comedians and More Gay Comedians

West Hollywood Park officially reopens with a ribbon-cutting ceremony while the Outlaugh 2012 Festival continues, plus Alec Mapa talks about being a gay dad and Scott Nevins talks about celebs.

Greeting and welcome to City Scoop. Today is Saturday, June 2, the 154th day of 2012. Here’s what’s going on in West Hollywood today.

Saturday in the Park

The newly renovated is officially reopened with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Members of the City Council will be on hand for the ceremony taking place on the promenade adjacent to the new basketball courts. The renovated park now features 2.5 acres of green space that was previously a baseball field.

Mid-City Neighborhood Meeting

Have a say in what’s going on in Mid-City as a neighborhood meeting discusses ways residents and businesses can work together to solve issues the area faces. Topics on the agenda include parking problems, National Night Out, new businesses set to open soon (including Laurel Hardware restaurant, The Box and Shoops Coffee Shop) and the Walgreens project. The meeting is at 10:30 a.m. at the Hudson restaurant, 1114 Crescent Heights Blvd.

Gay Comedians

The Outlaugh 2012 Festival continues as LGBT comics Erin Foley, Jason Stuart, Matthew Nouriel and Gloria Bigelow perform. Jason Dudey serves as host. Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, D-San Francisco, will be presented with the Outlaugh Comedy Award for his contribution to the LGBTQ community The laughs start at 8 p.m. at the Macha Theatre, 1107 Kings Road. A portion of the proceeds will benefit The Lavender Effect, the foundation creating a LGBTQ Museum and Cultural Center in Los Angeles.

Gaysian Funnyman

Actor/comedian Alec Mapa wowed audiences last fall with his one-man show, Baby Daddy. Chronicling Mapa's adventures as into gay fatherhood, this sidesplitting show returns with more insights into how the Ugly Betty scene stealer transitioned from doing stand-up routines for gay cruises and circuit parties to driving in carpools and attending PTA meetings. Showtime is 8 p.m. at Renberg Theatre at the LA Gay and Lesbian Center’s Village at Ed Gould Plaza, 1125 McCadden Place.

One Night Stand

Funnyman Scott Nevins, best know as the “Hilarious Hottie” from TruTV’s “The Smoking Gun Presents,” offers a “One Night Stand” sharing outrageous tales of his favorite stars as well as his celebrity vocal impressions, plus anecdotes about his stint as a judge for the Miss Kentucky Pageant. Nevins performs at 8:30 p.m. at Cabaret Ultra Suede, 661 N. Robertson Blvd.

Bands Playing in Town

  • Battle for Mayhem with Thrown into Exile, A Rise of a Tyrant, Lifeforms, Approaching Darkness, Emissary, Master Destructor, Maleficient Vigor and You Only Live Twice at the Key Club.  Doors open at 3 p.m., show starts at 4 p.m.
  • K'noup & Kelly with The Ruby Friedman Orchestra, Help the Doctor, The Relative Strangers and Abbot Kinney, Symphony at the Troubadour. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.
  • Virgil with The Lonely Drunks Club Band, Nations Afire and Haun Solo Project at the Viper Room. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.
  • Michael Monroe with Witchburn, The Hard Way, Flood, Snake Eyes and Premonition at Whisky a Go Go. Doors open at 8 p.m.
  • Jeff Cahill and Hollerboy LA at the Roxy Theatre. Show starts at 8 p.m.
  • Blackboard Jungle Reunion show with Glamour Punks, Swinging Things, DJ Jamie Scarp and Fizzy Bangers at the Roxy Theatre. Show starts at 8 p.m.
