Saturday's Scoop: Tree Plantings, Kid's Fair and Coffee with D'Amico

Community tree planting event on 900 block of North Hayworth, Healthy Kids Fair in West Hollywood Park and panel discussion about Ray Bradbury's science fiction. Plus chat about city issues over coffee with Councilmember John D'Amico.

Greetings and welcome to City Scoop. Today is Saturday, April 28, the 119th day of 2012. Here’s what’s happening in West Hollywood today.

Plant a Tree, Save the Planet

The city is holding a community tree planting event in recognition of Arbor Day. Seven Mimosa trees and seven Water Gum trees will be planted along the 900 block of North Hayworth Avenue, near the Laurel Elementary School, beginning at 9 a.m. Volunteers are invited to participate. No prior gardening experience needed, tools and gloves will be provided.

Coffee with the Councilman

Got concerns about what’s going on in the city? Got an issue you need to discuss with a member of the City Council? Here’s you chance to chat over a cup of java with City Councilmember John D’Amico as he hosts one of his “Coffee with the Councilman” gatherings. Residents can drop by Mo Café, 7900 Santa Monica Blvd. (at Fairfax) from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for an informal chat with D’Amico about issues impacting the city.

Kids Fair

The Seventeenth Annual Healthy West Hollywood Kids’ Fair comes to West Hollywood Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Kids’ Fair is a great place to receive information about community services for families, health and environmental education, recreation programs and more. Free for all!

Sci-fi and Bradbury

The Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society, the world’s oldest sci-fi and fantasy organization, hosts a panel discussion on ``Science Fiction and the Enduring Influence of Ray Bradbury.'' Renowned science fiction writers Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle and Harry Turtledove will be on hand to discuss Bradbury’s many works as part of the city’s Big Read 2012 events. The panel is at 4 p.m. in the City Council Chamber on street level of the West Hollywood Library. Free and open to all.

  • Club Bang at the Key Club. Show starts at 10:30 p.m.
