Saturday's Scoop: Historic Preservation, Rainbow Key Awards and Cycling for a Cause

A free walking tour points out historic sites in the city while the Rainbow Key Awards honor people significantly contributing to the LGBT community. Plus a charity cycle ride at Cycle House and first-time home buyers seminar at Keller Williams.

Greeting and welcome to City Scoop. Today is Saturday, June 16, the 168th day of 2012. Here’s what’s going on in West Hollywood today.

Historic Preservation Walking Tour

Learn more about the many historic buildings in the city and find out which ones are in danger of facing the wrecking ball. Preservation activist Roy Rogers Oldenkamp leads a walking tour through the Laurel, Hayworth, Havenhurst streets between Fountain Avenue and Sunset Boulevard. The free tour starts at 10 a.m. at Following the tour, the newly formed West Hollywood Historic Preservation group will hold a meeting. All are invited.

Rainbow Key Awards

The Abbey founder David Cooley, LGBT activist Diane Abbitt and transgender activist Karina Samala are three of the people being honored with this year’s Rainbow Key Awards. Presented by the city’s Lesbian and Gay Advisory Board, the Rainbow Key Awards honor individuals and groups who have made a significant contribution to the LGBT community. The other recipients are Jeannette Bronson, Ben Patrick Johnson, Roots of Equality, Nadia Sutton, Brenda Weathers, and Carolyn Weathers. The awards ceremony starts at 5 p.m. at the Robertson, 665 N. Robertson Blvd, followed by a reception. Free and open to all.

Learn the ins and outs of buying a home at a seminar for first-time home buyers or people just thinking about buying a home. Realtors Keno Rider and Jodi Barmash give you details about mortgages, inspections, closing costs and more. The free seminar is at 10:45 at Keller Williams Realty on the lobby level of the Directors Guild of America building, 7920 Sunset Blvd.

Ride Like The Wind

Charity begins at the gym, at least in the case of the ultra-popular Cycle House, which recently won The spinning studio is hosting a one-hour ride benefiting The Good Shepherd Center, a shelter and full service center for homeless women and children in downtown Los Angeles. The ride will feature a rotation of Cycle House's top trainers followed by a reception held in the adjacent outdoor courtyard. Ride time is 4 p.m. at 624 N. La Cienega Blvd.

  • OPM with The Lonely Drunks Club Band, DIS and Garrett Lee Robinson at Viper Room. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.
  • White Arrows (CD release show) with The Beat Connection and Mmoths at the Troubadour. Doors open at 8 p.m.
  • Vitalogy (Pearl Jam tribute band) and Stone Temple Piracy at House of Blues. Doors open at 8 p.m., show at 9 p.m.
  • Wild Child recreating at 1960s Doors concert at Whisky a Go Go. Show starts at 8 p.m.
  • The Grand Ole Punk with The Hnag and Anahita Skye at Roxy Theatre. Show starts at 8 p.m.
  • Club Bang at the Key Club. Show starts at 10:30 p.m.
