Saturday's Scoop: Drag Queen Baseball, Sunset Blvd Ready for its Close-Up

Greetings and welcome to City Scoop. Today is Saturday, April 21, the 112th day of 2012. Here is what’s happening in West Hollywood today.

Drag Queen Baseball

It’s the World Series as you’ve never seen it before. Two drag queen teams – the West Hollywood Cheerleaders and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence – play for the baseball championship. Opening pitch is at 1 p.m. at the Fairfax High School softball field (enter next to the tennis courts near Rosewood Avenue and Genesee). Tickets are $15 at the gate with proceeds benefiting Fairfax High’s Gay Straight Alliance, the LifeGroup LA (an AIDS service organization) and ACES (Acceptance, Compassion, Equality and Social Responsibility Club). Combating Bullying

They say music soothes the savage beast. And perhaps that includes the savage beast inside each of us. The Roxy Theater offers an all-ages show, “Concert to Combat Bullying and Hate Crimes,” featuring Leon Thomas III (who stars in the Nickelodeon TV series Victorious), Jasmine Villegas and Max Schneider (of Nickelodeon's How to Rock), Rachel Crow, Midnight Red and others. Proceeds benefit We Stop Hate, an anti-bullying and hate-crime organization dedicated to raising self-esteem in teens. Show starts at 12:30 p.m.

Here’s a chance to keep West Hollywood Elementary out of the red and in the black. A martini mixer and silent auction to benefit the school will be held at the Phyllis Morris Showroom at 655 N. Robertson. It’s the fifth year for the martini mixer which is always lots of fun. There are over 500 items for bid. The martini mixer runs from 5 to 9:30 p.m.

Art and Activism 451

As part of the ongoing Big Read 2012 events, the Center for Study of Political Graphics offers a panel discussion on art and activism and how it relates to Ray Bradbury's classic novel Fahrenheit 451. The panel discussion is at 3 p.m. in the City Council Chambers on street level at the West Hollywood Library. Free and open to all.

Stretching 22 miles from downtown to the Pacific, Sunset Boulevard encapsulates so much of what LA has to offer. The most famous part of Sunset Blvd is right here in West Hollywood. ABC presents a special edition of its newsmagazine 20/20 examining Sunset Boulevard tonight from 9-11 p.m. Even if you do have a night out on the Strip planned, it’s worth DVRing for when you get back.
