Norwich Community Garden Sees Its Last Day

City to begin clearing the garden Monday, as plans by property owner to develop the site put an end to city's lease deal, Mayor Pro Tem Jeff Prang says.

Gardeners at West Hollywood's oldest public plot at San Vicente Boulevard and Norwich Avenue are packing up.

According to Mayor Pro Tem Jeffrey Prang's newsletter, the owner of the Norwich Community Garden has plans to develop the land, so the city, which has been using the property under a long-term lease, must vacate the property by the end of the month.

"Gardeners were mailed a letter on Oct. 17, informing them to vacate the property by no later than Dec. 15," according to Prang. "They were informed of the deadline and asked to remove any items from their plot and collect any personal gardening tools."

West Hollywood's first garden sprouted shortly after the city's 1984 inception.  Closure seemed imminent in 2009 when the landowner died and his heirs were hit with a heavy inheritance tax, so the city worked out a month-to-month lease, reported Curbed LA.

Now that the owners are planning to develop the land, the city is forced to leave.

Clearance of the Norwich Community Garden is to begin Monday, Prang said, at which point the city will begin to restore the property and return it back to the owner.
