Friday's Scoop: Liza and '70s New Age Spirituality

Peter Mac starts spreading the news as Liza Minnelli in preview before the real thing at the Hollywood Bowl on Saturday. 1970s documentary examines the New Age spiritual movement of that era.

Double Your Liza

Liza Minnelli may be performing Saturday at the Hollywood Bowl, but get a preview tonight as Liza tribute artist Peter Mac becomes the lady with the Z. Mac not only performs Liza’s signature songs like “Cabaret” and “New York, New York,” he also chats with the audience as Liza about her famous parents, career and marriages. Mac starts spreading the news at 8 p.m. at the And if you can’t make it to the Hollywood Bowl on Saturday, Mac clicks his heels together three times at the French Market to become Judy Garland.

70s New Age Flashback

The New Age spiritual movement has evolved greatly over the years, but here’s a chance to see what it looked like 35 years in Southern California. Aliens from Spaceship Earth is a 1977 documentary interviewing various spiritual leaders like Ram Dass, Yogi Bhahan, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and Elizabeth Clare Prophet as well as actors like Cybill Sheperd, Raymond Burr, Martin Landau and Leigh Taylor-Young. Footage includes people being kidnapped by “deprogrammers,” people engaging in tantric sex and thousands of followers walking barefoot over hot coals. Aliens from Spaceship Earth screens at 8 p.m. at the Silent Movie Theatre, 611 Fairfax Avenue. Director Don Como will do a Q&A following the screening.
