Friday's Scoop: Ryan Cabrera, InkSlam and Outfest

Pop rocker Ryan Cabrera celebrates turning 30 with a show at the Key Club; gay rapper Solomon is an opening act. The InkSlam poetry festival continues and the Outfest LGBT film festival moves into its second day

Cabrera Turning 30

Pop rocker Ryan Cabrera, best known for his single “On the Way Down” and for his appearances on MTV’s The Hills and E!’s Pretty Wild, headlines a show at the . It’s a special birthday performance for Cabrera who turns 30 on July 18. , best known for the club anthem “Wit Us U Can’t,” is one of the opening acts.  Actor/singer Hunter Parish, best known for the Showtime series Weeds, is another. Doors open at 7 p.m., show starts at 7:30 p.m.

InkSlam

West Hollywood is currently the epicenter of the national spoken word universe as inkSlam continues for the third of its four days. Dubbed. “L.A.’s Premier Poetry Festival,” inkSlam features poetry workshops, panel discussions, showcases and competitive “slams.” Today’s events include a poetry workshop for youth at 10 a.m. and the Western Roundup semi-finals at 8 p.m. All events take place at the , 544 N. Fairfax Ave. Tickets available through the Greenway Arts Alliance

Unfiltered

LA-based comic Rick Shapiro may be known for finding the humor in any situation, but in his new book, Unfiltered, he manages to get serious from time to time too. A compilation of 200 writings ranging from stream-of-consciousness ramblings to diary entries to poetry, Unfiltered offers a fascinating glimpse at his inner demons, eclectic lifestyle and love of woman. Shapiro discusses and signs copies of his book at 7 p.m. at .

Out at the Movies

Outfest, the annual LGBT film festival is underway, screening 147 different films over its 10-day run. , ranging from a transgender psychological drama to a lesbian comedy about a woman having a very bad day to a romantic drama about a man reconnecting with his ex just as he’s leaving town.
