Tuesday's Scoop: Historic Preservation, Lambda Literary Book Club and Open Mike Night
New Weho Historic Preservation Organization meets at Forever Hollywood, while Lambda Literary Book Club meets at Weho Library. Plus, open mike night at the Laugh Factory.
Greetings and welcome to City Scoop. Today in Tuesday, May 29, the 150th day of 2012. Here’s what’s going on in West Hollywood today.
Believing that citizen advocacy is needed to help save more of West Hollywood’s historic buildings, a new group is forming. The West Hollywood Historic Preservation Organization will hold its initial meeting at 7:30 p.m. at the chapel on the grounds of the Forever Hollywood Cemetery, 6000 Santa Monica Blvd. All interesting is preserving the city’s rich heritage are encouraged to attend.

Sweet Like Sugar, a novel about an unconventional friendship, will be discussed at this month’s Lambda Literary Book Club gathering. The book by Wayne Hoffman chronicles the unexpected friendship between a 27-year-old gay man and an 80-year-old orthodox Rabbi grieving the death of his wife. Reviews have called Sweet Like Sugar “touching,” “charming” and “romantic.” The monthly Lambda Literary Book Club meets 7-8:30 p.m. at the West Hollywood Library.

Want to see some comedians in the making? Or think you have what it takes to be the next big star? Each Tuesday, the hosts its open mike night, offering wannabe comedians a chance to try out their act on the same stage where big timers like Jim Carrey, the Wayans Brothers and Jamie Foxx got their start. Open mike night starts at 6:30 p.m. Would-be performers should arrive at 5 p.m. to sign up for a chance to perform the in following Tuesday’s show.
