Space Shuttle Endeavour, the View from Altadena (Photos)

Hundreds gathered on the west side of Hahamongna near the intersection of Windsor and Ventura to witness the JPL flyover.

By 10 a.m. there was a solid crowd gathered at the corner of Windsor and Ventura, enough to slow down traffic.  By the time Endeavour flew over, there were hundreds and hundreds, a gathering bigger than Altadena's regular events.

The crowd was wowed by the shuttle pass-over with big shouts and lots of noise from the first moment it was spotted until it was all over with.

Afterwards the traffic lasted for 30 minutes or longer.

We'll have video of the whole experience later on at the site.  For now we have the photos above.

It went right over my school--twice! The kids went berserk. So did I, I guess.

JPL Flyover: Odyssey Charter School had quite the show with the shuttle flying directly over the field to the squeals of delight from the entire student body. Students were waving and jumping up and down with excitement as the underbelly of the 747 blocked out the shuttle...but the students let out a second squeal of awe when the 747 banked and the whole shuttle became visible, sending a ripple of pride through the crowd and the students applauded as the shuttle disappeared.

We were on Woodbury headed west when my daughter said (in her best daughter voice) "It's behind us...DAD!!" One illegal U turn later, I parked in the left hand turn lane at Navarro (maybe..wasn't really paying attention...heh). It was also a spectacular view, coming in out of the hazy white sky in the south east to a picture perfect view of the shuttle and its escorts in the blue blue sky with a few little puffy white clouds over the mountains as a backdrop. Then we watched it swing out over JPL and bank south. There were a few people at the intersection, with the foresight to have cameras: if you were one of them, I'd love to see your pics.

Thanks to all who posted the awesome pictures - I was a little too far west in La Crescenta to see her fly over. What a great thing this is for Southern California.
