Walk Across America for Marriage Equality

In an effort to raise awareness regarding marriage equality, USC film student and director, A.J. Goodrich will walk across America talking to people along the way about love, sex, commitment and how they feel about same-sex marriage and LGBT civil rights. A documentary film called "The Road Less Travelled By", will be created upon completion of the walk. In the first leg of his journey, West Hollywood Mayor John Heilman will join A.J. Goodrich as he walks through West Hollywood on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 starting at 10:30 a.m. at West Hollywood Park Auditorium, 647 N. San Vicente Boulevard, the site of some of the first same-sex marriages in California.

“I am excited to join A.J. during the first steps of his long journey,” said West Hollywood Mayor John Heilman. “It is my hope that A.J. and his film are able to touch the hearts and minds of those he meets along the way, with the message that same-sex marriage isn’t only about LGBT people but about the civil rights of all Americans,” continued Mayor Heilman.

A.J.’s journey will cover approximately 4,000 miles and take a total of seven months, leading the crew over mountains and deserts, through Las Vegas and Native American reservations in New Mexico, across the wide expanse of Texas, past the devastated Gulf of Mexico, up through the Deep South and the Adirondacks to D.C., New York and end in Boston, where same-sex marriage was first legalized.

From June 2008 through November 4, 2008, the City of West Hollywood issued more than 1,000 marriage licenses and performed more than 600 civil ceremonies. Since its incorporation in 1984, the City of West Hollywood has been one of the most ardent advocates for the legal rights of LGBT families and marriage equality. It was one of the first cities in the country to pass a resolution in support of same-sex marriage. The City of West Hollywood is known throughout the world for its pioneering efforts on behalf of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) rights and enacted one of the first domestic partnership laws in the country in 1985.
